Main Ideas:

A settlement is coming soon for those who were effected by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There is still  questions surrounding the envoirmental effects (i.e. illnesses caused by the spill) but people's voices are finally being heard. Lawyers in the area feel confident that people who did in fact get sick will be able to get their medical bills paid. Many  People who are/were living in within range of the spill are eligable for a claim. So far there have been over 200 illness claims associated with the spill. Health officals belive that the two of the major health concerns are with the air quality and the quality of the seafood out of the gulf. Some of the sympotoms that were reported were some major and some were minor as nausia and lightheadedness but some were as extreme as having cysts develop on spines.

Conclusion:

Only time will tell how much BP actually will have to pay to those who were directly effected by the spill. As of now BP plans to pay out 7.8 billion dollars in damages directly to those effected by health concerns. Also BP promised to pay out 105 million dollars to help improve health care in the gulf reigon. Medical bills won't get paid until the U.S. district judge Carl Barbier approves the final settlement.

  1. BP continues to work towards repairing the damages caused by the oil spill. By paying almost 8 billion to fix damages and improve health care in the gulf BP is doing a good job to improve their reputation. I would not be surprised to see more than 200 illness claims come up considering that the oil spill affected most of the american coastline on the gulf. If more people come forwards with claims the 8 billion dollar price tag may increase considerably.
