Main Idea:
Being “burned out” means that you feel overwhelmingly exhausted, dislike your workplace, and don’t think your efforts are valued. According to a new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, being burned out at work can connect with overeating and uncontrolled eating behaviors. This experiment involved 230 working women who felt burned out daily. They had more emotional and uncontrolled eating compared to those without this feeling, even after a year. Women that were already overweight failed to make changes causing damage to their self-esteem other factors towards weight maintenance. Stress is a key factor for difficulty to change diets and exercise patterns.

Conclusion:
Stress is a main factor, according to this article, for obesity and staying healthy. Obesity is a huge and growing problem in the United States, especially for the people out of college with a job. To solve this problem, starting with you can be most helpful. Relaxing and taking breaks can be beneficial in addition to healthy alternatives, such as taking the stairs, parking a couple blocks away from work, and eating fruits and vegetables.

Synthetic Marijuana is just as dangerous

People who use synthetic marijuana are ending up in just as many emergency rooms as the real drug. This drug, known as K2, is sprayed with chemicals that give it the certain properties of weed, but also make it very toxic. It is sold in places such as convenience stores, gas stations, and other such locations. While it has the effects that people look for when smoking marijuana, it also has side effects which do not resemble the drug. These side effects include catatonic and listless patients. What is especially dangerous about this replacement for marijuana is that there is little to no knowledge about the drug itself, or how to treat an overdose. It is also very hard to detect, because it doesn't show up on conventional drug tests, which makes it all the more dangerous and difficult to deal with.

Conclusion:
People are using a replacement for marijuana, which is actually more toxic and deadly than the original drug. There is very little knowledge on this drug, and experts are saying to document all information regarding treatment and to share it with other doctors to find the best practices. This new drug could have disastrous effects on the teenage brain, which would severely impact their memory and induce psychosis.

Dangers of Synthetic Marijuana

CNN.com
March 19, 2012

A recent study has shown that more emergency rooms across the U.S. are reporting an increase in patients who used synthetic marijuana. Synthetic marijuana is known as K-2, or spice. It is a blend of plant materials that have been sprayed with chemicals, which produces a similar high to marijuana. It has dangerous side effects, and doctors don't know how to treat an overdose. The chemicals in Spice are toxic, and cause side effects such as, inability to speak, restlessness, aggitation, aggression, and sweating too much. The poison control center reported 4,500 calls involving spice from 2010 to 2011. This new drug is used by some as a substitute for marijuana because it doesn't show up on drug tests, but it is proving to be a lot worse, with adverse side effects. A lot of the side effects are unknown still, and doctors dont know what it is doing to your body. Spice should be banned from being sold so people dont harm themselves anymore without knowing it.

Romney turns up the heat on Obama energy policies

Mitt Romney has attacked president Obama for his energy policies and called for the resignation of the top energy officials. Recently gas prices have risen and Romney is blaming president Obama saying he hasn’t done anything to reduce dependence on foreign oil. Romney has blamed Obama for wanting higher energy prices to speed the transition away from oil and fossil fuels. Obamas administration responded by saying that the oil prices are not controlled by the administration and are instead determined by global oil prices. In addition David Axelrod, Obama’s senior campaign adviser, said that Obama seeking higher energy cost was nonsense and that domestic production of oil is now higher than anytime in recent memory. Interior secretary Ken Salazar has said “the fact of the matter is that we are producing more from public lands, both oil and gas, both onshore as well as offshore”. Press secretary jay carney said that if the answer to the oil prices was increased drilling then we would be seeing lower prices because we have increased domestic oil and gas production.

I think that Mitt Romneys attacks on President Obama and his administration are unfounded and I think they need to get there facts straight before they say anything. I think that transferring away from foreign oil towards domestic oil and clean energy is important and I would support any way Obama is moving to do that. I am not worried about rising gas prices; the United States still has the luxury of low gas prices compared to the rest of the world.

Title: FDA commissioner talks counterfeit drugs
Author: Caleb Hellerman
Publication Name: CNN
Date of Publication: March 15th, 2012
Length of article: 2 pages

Main Ideas

The FDA recently announced that 19 hospitals and medical centers in America purchased a counterfeit version of Avastin, an expensive and commonly used cancer drug. Production of counterfeit cancer drugs may be encouraged by the ongoing shortage of cancer drugs.
Thankfully, an early warning from colleagues in other countries allowed the FDA to identify distributors before any patients were harmed. However, this error is a signal for the FDA to work harder with the law enforcement and the patient community in order to ensure safety of drugs. It is difficult for a health care provider to identify a fake drug, because some of the fakes are very good. The FDA is eager to work with Congress, which is considering legislation that gives FDA a stronger authority and a better system for tracking drugs. Right now, 40% of finished drugs and 80% of active ingredients come from other countries, there are 150 or so different countries that these can come from.

Conclusion

A counterfeit version of Avastin, a commonly used expensive cancer drug, was purchased in 19 medical facilities in America. Although no patients were harmed, the FDA is working on a better system that gives them more control, in case of a greater problem. Another issue closely related to counterfeit drugs is drug shortage, which encourages illegal markets to fill in gaps with counterfeit drugs.

Many people and big companies look to use simple password that fit the criteria of having an uppercase letter and a number. So many fortune 500 companies are resorting to simple passwords such as: "Password1." Hackers have caught onto this trick and have been making their way onto the system. Another way hackers have been attacking individuals is through ones smart phone. But less than 20% of intrusions were discovered until it was too late. A few companies discovered that a lot of their break ins went undetected until notified by the authorities. Some tips that may help in ones security include: making your password longer, or interchanging letters with symbols. A seven character combination has 70 trillion possible combinations while an eight character password has more than 6 quadrillion combinations! So in this case, longer is better. The battle between user and hackers still continue, with both sides changing constantly to keep up with one another

In summary, hackers don't need some elaborate algorithm to get into someones account, or system, they just need some common sense. There are ways to battle these hackers by updating your passwords. Remember; the longer the better. With this constant war against the hackers of the world, you need to keep your information on check.

Main Idea:
The main idea of this article was to explain what narcolepsy is, symptoms of it, as well as its misdiagnosis, and that it is a lifelong disorder. The article, specifically was about a girl named Clea Howard from New York who kept questioning why she was so tired all the time even after getting a good nights sleep. Since her freshmen year in high school she would fall asleep in class, while doing homework, etc. and she always wondered why she was so tired all the time. She went to see her pediatrician who had no clue, as well as her endocrinologist who also had no idea what was going. That was until her pediatrician recommended a sleep disorder study, and there Clea was told that she had narcolepsy, which explained all her symptoms and why she was so tired after a good nights rest. The article also included that many misdiagnoses occur every year and that this condition affects 1 in 2000 people.

Conclusion
In conclusion, narcolepsy is a disorder very commonly misdiagnosed as laziness, depression, schizophrenia or an attention disorder. Although none of these are true doctors overlook the fact that the extreme tiredness is in fact narcolepsy. It is a lifelong disorder but if diagnosed correctly, taking certain drugs prescribed from your doctor will allow you to be able to live a normal life.

State budget cuts hit small-town Ohio

Alana Semuels

MAIN IDEA:
In a small town in Ohio, by the name of Uniopolis, is hit very hart by budget cuts. Although the populace asked for this governor to do these cuts, these residents find them unsatisfactory. This goes to a point where the town is considering closing down, even though it has been there for 100 years. People just cannot afford to live in this town, as because of budget cuts school don't get much funding and students have to pay up to 500 dollars to participate in a high school sport. All of these cuts of the budget have made it very hard on the populace to keep up and therefore many have decided it might be better to just close down the town. As the mayor of 19 years said "About the only thing that can save it now is an act of God".
CONCLUSION:
This town pretty much has to close down because of a downward spiral of the economy. The government has to do cuts and the people asked for them but once they do get them they are not satisfied with what comes out. The people are going to close down their 100 year old town which now only has a part time nail salon and a mail post.

Title of Article: U.S. House approves bill that would remake California water law
Author: Richard Simon and Bettina Boxall
Publication Name: Los Angeles Times
Date of Publication: 3/1/12

Main Idea:

On Feburary 29th the House of Representatives passed a bill which can wipe out environmental protection and drop reforms of federal irrigation policies that have irritated agriculture business in the Central Valley for a long time. Luckily the chances of that bill becoming a law are very slim, mainly because the White House has already issued a veto threat and has to be dealt with by the Democratic-controlled senate where two senators vowed to fight against it. Republicans argue that environmental regulations are taking away jobs from Americans. The bill is also known as the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Water Reliability Act. If this was to be passed, it would kill a settelment which has launched an ambitious river restoration project in the West. It would also destroy a 20-year-old federal law which set aside a big portion of federal irrigation supplies in California for environmental purposes.

Conclusion:

If the bill's was to pass, that will show the growing influence of Central Valley
Republicans after the GOP takeover of the House of Represenatives sicne last year. Opponents of the bill are warning that if Congress overrides state water law in California, it
can do the same thing any where else. The Republicans argue that the federal government already has a lot of control in the setting California water policy.

Russia's Citizens Fight Back

Title of article: In Russia, thousands protest presidential election results
Author: Sergei Loiko
Publication Name: LA Times

Main Idea:

20,000 Russians came to protest in Moscow this Monday, all fighting for their right to elect an honest leader. Putin has been accused several times of stealing the presidential election, the Russians are furious and calling for Putin's immediate resignation. In Pushkin Square, Russians stood in weather hitting below zero, blasting music, and chanting 'Putin is a thief!". One protestor was interviewed and gave his opinion on the matter, "I came here because I just hate the thought of having to live another 12 years under Putin and his corrupt gang". Many were persistent and would not leave the square, even with the threatening whirr of the police helicopters hovering above their heads. When the rally was over, at least 250 citizens were arrested although no one is certain if they were detained at the square.

As elections began in Russia, many voted in their work place and having their bosses looking over their shoulders, ordering which square to mark (obviously in favor of Putin). In other cases, voters were lugged around in buses and attached different names to every station, leading to a higher vote towards Putin. The soon to be prime minister of Russia once again went to even farther depths to keep mouths shut and elections closed by ordering men to take out his opponent's, Prokhorov, campaign workers.

Conclusion:

Unfair elections are unconstitutional and unethical. In my opinion, the only way to gain the rights you've lost by poster child dictators like Putin, is to fight back. I think it's courageous that the Russians are protesting against Putin, even if they face criminal charges or worse. I don't see much hope of stopping Putin, but there's no harm in trying.

Beholding beauty: How it's Been Studied

Semir Zeki a professor of neuroesthetics at University College London has found that there are cultural trends for what people believe is beautiful. The Japanese have a preference for asymmetry, while the Western idealize symmetrical faces as most do. Zeki believes that because we see ourselves everyday in the mirror, analyzing all of our faults, and blemishes we do not see ourselves as beautiful. Seeing others from afar and less constantly gives us less time to recognize their defects, which is why they seem more beautiful. The perception of beauty may weaken as we notice these imperfections.

Faces that are more symmetrical and average looking are deemed as more attractive in scientific studies. In the more primal state of hunters and gatherers, men who were good hunters generally liked females with symmetric faces, and women tend to like men with symmetric faces even more so when they are pregnant or nursing. Even babies respond more positively towards people with symmetrical faces, because it is the most basic shape. According to a 2007 study in Perception and Psychophysics, human ancestors would pass on good genes to offspring and be repelled by trains that were useless in survival. In 2011, a study in the journal Economics and Human Biology found that people with asymmetrical faces had come from more difficult and deprived childhoods than those with symmetrical faces.

Women are more drawn to rugged, dominant men during periods of high fertility because dominance is perceived as fitness, which is why women buy sexier clothes when they're most fertile. They are also attracted to men with higher testosterone levels as they would have strong immune systems, which is a key attribute in survival.

Beauty is also plays a key role within friendships, women tend to have friends with similar attractiveness in a study in 2010 in the journal Human Nature. This is because woman who's the less attractive one in a friendship pair are likely to see their more attractive friend as a mating rival.

The company Procter & Gamble has created Tide Pod, small liquid detergent-filled tablets designed to be tossed into the washing machine without the mess of measuring cups.  The product took eight years to design and create.  Procter & Gamble finds its success in improving upon everyday products to make chores easier for its customers.  They were looking to create a product that could work in any temperature water, any size load, any washing machine, weighed less and clean better.  Since detergent has remained pretty much unchanged since 1984, they expect Tide Pod to be a success.  Though the competition is tough, Procter & Gamble has an advantage because Tide is one of the most famous brands on the market.  The company expects to make $300 million from Tide Pod in the first year.

So a new product has been born, hopefully one that will make laundry easier.  Obviously, Procter & Gamble expect to make lots of money from Tide Pod especially since they spent so much time and money into creating it and marketing it.  However, things are looking good for them because consumer testing revealed a 97% approval rate.

I think it's awesome that Tide Pods have been invented.  I hope to get them in my home because I hate doing the laundry, especially measuring the liquid detergent.  Sometimes I put in too much or too little and I have to rewash the load.  I also hate how I can never pour all the liquid completely out of the cup, so all this sticky residue remains in the cup and it's quite disgusting.  So overall, I'm glad that Tide Pro is now on the market.

Healthcare Reforms Taking Effect Early

Title of Article: To stay fiscally healthy, state’s hospitals want fewer patients

Author: Anna Gorman

Publication Name: Los Angeles Times

Date of Publication: March 4, 2012

Length of Article: 994 words

Main Ideas:

Some California institutions are trying to get an early start on healthcare reforms. They are trying to keep some patients out of their hospitals. Hospital executives have to adapt to a new way of doing business, such that a patient’s health will be secured and penalties would be imposed for less efficient and lower-quality care. The federal reform law changes the way hospitals and doctors will be paid; fees would be based on a patient outcome rather than on how long patients stay in the hospital or how many services they receive. The executive director for the consumer group Health Access, Anthony Wright, said he hopes the new incentives will lead to more coordinated treatment for patients. Because government insurance programs don’t cover costs, hospitals have relied on private payers to make up their deficits, but now that would become more difficult because insurers are under pressure to reduce rates as part of healthcare reform. According to Richard Scheffler, a UC Berkeley health economics professor, smaller hospitals will be among the hardest hit because they are on their own paying for administrative costs and negotiating rates with insurance companies, and the hospitals that join larger health care systems are more likely to survive.

Conclusion:

Imposing the healthcare reforms early would mean that some units in hospitals would be closed. The reimbursement for these services would either be too low or it was to be cut eventually as a part of the healthcare reforms. The healthcare reforms are going for quality over quantity; “they are trying to keep some patients out of their beds.” Many hospitals are changing their tactics for treating a patient to improve care and reduce the number of unnecessary tests in these units. The ultimate goal is to provide patients with the best care as soon as possible and to reduce costs and stop duplicating services wherever possible.

Japanese Prime Minister Says Government Shares Blame for Nuclear Disaster

500 Words

Main Ideas:
The new prime minister of Japan, Yoshihiko Noda, talked about the devastating nuclear power plant disaster that happened to Fukishima Daiichi, on March 11th 2011. He acknowledge that the government had a fault in not making sure that the reactors could withstand earthquakes and tsunami.Currently 2 of Japan's 54 reactors are operating. The local communities refuse to have the other's operating. To help insure the Japanese people the government has decided to create a stress test. The stress test will put the reactors through earthquakes and tsunami much like the one that hit Fukishima Daiichi. Naoto Kan was the prime minister of Japan when the disaster happened. Mr. Kan wanted to phase out of using nuclear power plants as an energy source. Mr. Noda does not agree. Mr. Noda who took over prime minister in September, agreed that the government did not put in enough effort into rebuilding the coastal communities that were destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami. The government finally set up a ministry in reconstructive efforts, 11 months after the disaster. One problem Mr. Noda is facing the the local communities deciding to rebuild, or to move to higher ground.

Conclusion:
Mr. Nado should put all of the governments effort into rebuilding the areas devastated by the disaster. Even though Japan needs to start putting their other reactors in operation, i think he should first gain the trust of the communities that surround the power plant. He should put more reconstructive projects of the communities that were destroyed.

Main Idea:

Lundbeck, a European pharmaceutics research corporation, has been working on a drug that they say can prevent and stop binge drinking activities in young people.  Binge drinking is a major problem in Europe and the company is hoping to combat this growing trend with their new drug.  In Europe, binge drinking is the second most common risk factor to people's health.  In a blind test many users of the drug reported a drop in their alcohol consumption by up to 60%.  Currently the drug is still in its testing phase but it is expected to one day be released to the public.

Conclusion:

This drug could provide a great stepping stone for many people who have become dependent on alcohol.  It could even turn out to be a cure for alcoholism and it could save thousands of lives all around the world.  The creators or the drug, Lundbeck, hope to greatly decrease the number of alcohol related deaths that occur in Europe each year.  Hopefully their dream will be realized.

Author: Mark Mardell

In an address to the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington, President Barack Obama stated that the United States "will not hesitate" to use military action against Iran if it keeps pursuing a path toward developing nuclear weapons, though there are still other options on the table. The US and its allies believe that Iran is planing to use its nuclear program for military purposes, a charge that Tehran denies. Speculation is mounting that Israel may carry out a pre-emptive strike against Iran rather than run the risk of it acquiring nuclear capabilities. President Obama is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. Israel's President, Shimon Peres, was quoted as saying that Iran was a "evil, corrupt regime" and "a danger to the world". The International community has tried to respond in a more diplomatic manner. The United States has been tightening sanctions and the EU recently imposed an oil embargo. Iran stands by its claim that it is developing a peaceful nuclear program.

Conclusion

In a meeting with the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful Israeli lobby group, President Obama said that while it may be necessary for the US to use force against Iran to curb its nuclear activities, diplomacy is not out of the question. The United States is trying to deter Iran with sanctions and the EU has an oil embargo in place. Iran denies that it is attempting to build nuclear weapons.

Main Ideas:

A settlement is coming soon for those who were effected by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There is still  questions surrounding the envoirmental effects (i.e. illnesses caused by the spill) but people's voices are finally being heard. Lawyers in the area feel confident that people who did in fact get sick will be able to get their medical bills paid. Many  People who are/were living in within range of the spill are eligable for a claim. So far there have been over 200 illness claims associated with the spill. Health officals belive that the two of the major health concerns are with the air quality and the quality of the seafood out of the gulf. Some of the sympotoms that were reported were some major and some were minor as nausia and lightheadedness but some were as extreme as having cysts develop on spines.

Conclusion:

Only time will tell how much BP actually will have to pay to those who were directly effected by the spill. As of now BP plans to pay out 7.8 billion dollars in damages directly to those effected by health concerns. Also BP promised to pay out 105 million dollars to help improve health care in the gulf reigon. Medical bills won't get paid until the U.S. district judge Carl Barbier approves the final settlement.

date of publication: March 4, 2012

On the morning of Sunday March the 4th , President Obama gave a speach to a pro-Israel policy conference in Washington. The President gave this speech in order to back up his dicisions about the conflicts with Isreal. Obama restated that he is willing to use "all elements of American power" which includes military force to prevent Iran from gaining a neuclear weapon. Though Obama states that he is willing to use military power to stop Iran from gaining this nuclear weapon, he also made it clear that he would prefer to use diplomatic solutions than create a military conflict. This Monday Obama will meet with the Israeli Prime Minister to debate the fact that the Israeli government does not feel that America has done enough to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Obama said during his speach that, "Already there is too much loose talk of war" continuing on to say "Over the last few weeks, such talk has only benefited the Iranian government, by driving up the price of oil, which they depend upon to fund their nuclear program. For the sake of Israel’s security, America’s security, and the peace and security of the world, now is not the time for bluster; now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in, and to sustain the broad international coalition that we have built."

To conclude, during his speach Obama told America that if needed he would result to military power to stop Iran from building a nuclear weapon. Though he is recieving pressure from the Israeli government to stop Iran's nuclear program Obama is trying to solve the problem in a diplomatic way in order to presurve peace. Obama has stated that jumping to talk of military conflict increases tensions with Iran and is driving up oil prices. Obama thinks that the money from oil is being used to fund Iran's nuclear program and therefor a diplomatic solution is the best way to solve this conflict.

Author: Sindya N. Bhanoo

Length: 300 words

Biologist Kevin Laland, of University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and his team recently performed an experiment comparing children's problem solving skills to that of monkeys. A set of children or monkeys were put together and given a puzzle to solve. After the group solved the puzzle, they were given a reward. The puzzle was in multiple stages and the puzzlers got a better reward at each stage. What Laland found was surprising. Although both groups solved the puzzles, the children taught each other how to solve the puzzle and even gave the other kids their own rewards when they did it right. The monkeys on the other hand did no sharing and when adults were put in with younger monkeys they even saw the older ones stealing from the young ones; there was absolutely no teaching happening there. Laland says this shows one of our main distinctions from the rest of the animal kingdom; we know how to teach and share. This makes us work as a bigger unit and allows us to put all our heads together and cooperate. Laland says that this explains why we have such complicated machinery and advanced technology, and that no one person could ever have come up with all this amazing stuff by themselves.

Conclusion:

This new found information, that one of the main reasons why humans have taken over the planet is because of our ability to cooperate, is very exciting. Kevin Laland has helped us gain an insight into our own biological advancement as well as how our society is shaped. This discovery could helps us understand other animals' ways as well as understand ourselves better. Hopefully this shows that cooperation is the way we are suppose to function and help us deal with manners in a more civilized and cooperative way.
